How much does it cost to print my own book?

Book production is a complex multi-stage process. To obtain a cost estimate, a number of basic parameters must be specified. The most important of them are: circulation, binding, format, number of pages, paper, printing, finishing.

Each of these parameters affects the price of the book. The basic rule is that increasing the print run decreases the unit price of the book. Nothing lowers the price of a book as much as increasing the print run. Another important parameter is the format, the size of which is more or less proportional to the production price of the book. This is mainly due to the increased demand for raw materials and a larger print area. Another aspect is the way the book is bound. The choice of book binding is very important as it affects the appearance, durability and comfort of using the book. For example: a glued book will be more difficult to open than a sewn-glued book , which unfolds better (the pages tilt to the sides better, the book does not close by itself), but is more expensive to make. Consider whether the book is to be convenient to use or only cheap. When choosing paper, apart from the aesthetic issue of choosing the color or type of paper, it is important whether the paper is to be plain or fluff. If the book has a small number of pages, choosing plain paper, the book may look like a thin notebook and thus be ineffective. In this case, it is worth considering the choice of fluff paper, which will significantly increase its volume and make the spine much wider. Fluff paper is characterized by a greater thickness with the same weight, so that a thicker book will not be heavy. After considering and specifying all these parameters, the book can be valued on our website using the book calculator available after selecting the format at the top of this page.

Paper is an important consideration when printing a book. It is worth considering the weight and thickness of the book. If the book has few pages, the use of fluff paper of considerable thickness may have a beneficial effect. In the case of books with a large number of pages, it is necessary to consider its considerable weight and volume, in this case it is worth using papers of less thickness and weight. The size of the spine in different types of binding has its limit, therefore the issue of its thickness is important. Speed-E papers are primarily characterized by high whiteness, unlike Ecco Book papers, which have a natural or cream color similar to that found in old books.

Description of selected raw materials:

Speed E

Uncoated paper, popularly known as offset paper, very similar to that which is popularly used for office printers. It is very white, therefore it is suitable for both black and color printing. With glued binding it allows to obtain a very strong bond, guaranteeing the durability of the printed book.

Ecco Book

Uncoated wood bulky paper. It is available in cream and white versions. Thanks to technological loosening, it is characterized by a significant thickness in relation to the grammage and high opacity. Its parameters make it possible to obtain a light book without reducing its volume. This paper, in particular the cream version, is not suitable for color book printing. Its cream type allows you to print books that resemble those known from decades ago.

Sol Plus

Wood, coated, fluff paper, natural white color. It is characterized by very good opacity and volume parameters in relation to its low basis weight. Thanks to its high parameters, it can be used as a replacement for wood-free chalked papers of much higher grammage. The Sol Plus paper guarantees excellent quality two-sided color printing. Its low grammage significantly affects the cost of printing a book.

Types of book binding

Paperback - the most popular

Paperback books have a cover made of paper / cardboard with a weight of 250-350g - (stiffness similar to a business card).

Hardcover - higher price and longer delivery time

Hardcover books have a solid cardboard cover about 2 mm thick. (high stiffness, does not allow to bend freely)

The method of joining sheets inside the book block

Sewn with wire / saddle stitch

The pages are joined in two places with the use of wire / staples. The binding is applicable for a book with a volume of 8 to several dozen pages (depending on the thickness of the paper used). The number of pages in the book block must be divisible by 4. The spine in this binding has a round shape. Books made in this setting are easy to open. The wire-sewn binding is the cheapest available in the printing house's offer.

The most popular way of binding printed books. Pages arranged parallel to each other are glued along the edges. The spine of the book is rectangular and its width ranges from 3 to 50 mm. Perfect binding, depending on the thickness of the paper used, is used for books with a page volume> 40. Books that do not reach a spine with a width of 3 mm require the use of a sewn binding for technological reasons . Books made in glued binding, due to the parallel gluing of pages, have worse opening than sewn books. In terms of the ease of opening a book, the volume of the book (spine thickness) is also very important. Glued-bound books with a large number of pages (several hundred), where the spine width reaches a few cm, are characterized by much better openability . In this matter, it can be assumed that the thicker the spine, the better the book behaves.

In glued binding, depending on the needs, two gluing technologies are used: hot and PUR.

Hot-melt is the most popular method commonly found in books for decades. There are many varieties of glue in this technology which is constantly being improved. The latest types of hot glue achieve flexibility and durability parameters similar to those of polyurethane glue, which significantly increases their use.
Hot-melt is characterized by high durability, glue joint and favorable price and production efficiency. It is most suitable for books printed on uncoated paper. Its significant advantage is the speed of setting which occurs immediately after the glue cools down (about 3 minutes), allowing for further bookbinding and quick delivery of the finished product to the recipient.

PUR (polyurethane glue) - The glue hardened during a chemical reaction, obtains high flexibility and adhesion to all printing bases. It gives measurable benefits when gluing books and catalogs in which coated - chalk paper is used inside.

It is a type of hybrid binding in which pages are sewn into notebooks of 16-32 pages, and then glued together to form a book with a volume of up to a thousand pages. The sewn-glued binding combines the best features of both the above-mentioned sewn and glued binding. Easy opening of the book - as in a sewn binding + a large number of pages and a spine up to 50 mm wide - as in a glued binding.

The luminaire is popularly used in various documentation, menus and catalogs that will be intensively used. Thanks to the perforation of the pages and the use of a metal spiral, sheets of any stiffness can be easily turned over many times without the risk of their falling out, as is the case with other bindings during intensive everyday use. The lack of a spine allows the book to be broken in any way. It is a binding very comfortable to use and very durable. The possibility of choosing a spiral in different colors can be an additional decoration of the book. The durability of the book in a spiral binding can be additionally increased by using round corners, which will exclude their deformation and delamination during intensive use.
